As for characters, be creative and have fun! No need to spend a load of galleons on a pre-made costume. Use what you have and embellish! :) And if you are just not the excited extrovert I am, come as a Muggle (non-magical folk). Witches and wizards are welcome, but Muggles will be tolerated. ;)
If you are wanting a quick and simple robe tutorial speckled with corny Potter puns, this is it! "Sewing Nerd" does a great job for the novice sewer while keeping you entertained with one liners. However, she is a bit quick (for a Hufflepuff ;)) so you might need to hit pause as work through her steps...and her jokes :)
